Google will not hand over their search results to the US government, however they will happily censor search results in China. The bottom line is, when China asks Google to jump, Google asks ‘how high’:

Last week Google announced its intention to resist a Department of Justice court action underway. DOJ wanted Google to allow a surveillance test of millions of its users’ search queries as part of its effort to enforce online pornography legislation passed by Congress to protect children. Yahoo, AOL, and MSN had already agreed to cooperate. But now, in an extraordinary development, Google has announced its decision to join the largest internet censorship effort in the world, being run by Communist China.

Google will actively assist the Chinese government in barring access to thousands of web sites and search terms, in fact anything on the world wide web the Chinese feel might destablize its authoritarian government. It will also eliminate the blogging and email services it offers elsewhere in the world. According to the Associated Press: “Google officials characterized the censorship concessions in China as an excruciating decision for a company that adopted ‘don’t be evil’ as a motto.?

Michelle Malkin has more on this, including of photoshopped versions of Google’s logo.

Say Anything has posted a cached version of Google’s censor policy. Why? Because Google has since removed the page from their site. Ironically, it was found using their own cache.

This is one thing I disagree about. I think its a good thing google is now in China. Although they are being sensored, its a start towards freedom in my eyes. We all know there will be ways around the sensorship too! On the google not handing over search results to the government for everyone who uses their site, GOOD FOR THEM! There is a limit on how much info they need to know. If they need to find out who has been searching for a specific site, or specific search term, ok, but they should have reason.
Lets not lose our own freedom in search of security. This is coming from a stern conservative & republican.

In China, the people have no illusion of personal privacy. In America, however, for the time being at least, we still do.

    Google, Free Speech, and China…

Now, if I can write something that affects a couple hundred people, imagine what stifling 1.3 billion Chinese people does. Even if a portion of those people decides to blog or use the Internet, their limited choices affects their worldview on a whole…..

However, many notable American sites had already been blocked, most prominently the search engines and MSM such as The New York Times (not really a loss).

Setting aside the protest logos we’ve all been creating to mock Google’s caving in to Chinese censorship, this is the REAL logo currently at Google.cn, obviously to usher in the Year of the Dog (happy version linked here). The REAL…...

Sad… but that’s what companies do; they seek to maximize their bottom line and have to operate within the laws and requirments of the regimes in which they do business.
