HH: Let me ask you a tough question, Joel, because this is the toughest one. J.P. Blecksmith was a young Marine lieutenant, graduated from Annapolis, killed in Fallujah on November 11th, 2004. Just a tremendous human being and man. If you meet his parents on the street, what do you say to them?JS: That I’m so, so sorry.
HH: Do you honor the service that their son did?
JS: To honor the service their son…now this is a dumb question, but what do you mean by honor? That’s a word you keep using. I’m not entirely…maybe that’s my problem. But I’m not entirely sure what you’re…
HH: Honor usually means gratitude and esteem. Are you grateful for and esteem what he did? Honestly?
JS: Honestly? I admire the bravery. I don’t…you know, I feel like he did something I could never do, so I’m kind of in awe on some level. Am I grateful, that I feel like he protected me? Um, no I don’t.
HH: And so, do you think he died in vain?
JS: Yeah. I do. And that’s why I’m so horrified by all this, and why I don’t want empty sentiments prolonging the war.
HH: And the people who’ve died in Afghanistan. Have they died in vain?
JS: Well, if they haven’t, what have they accomplished?
HH: I’m asking you, Joel. You wrote the column. You tell me. Have they accomplished nothing?
JS: Well, um, do I think that I, as an American, are safer because of what they did?
HH: That wasn’t what I asked. I askd did they accomplish anything in going to Afghanistan.
JS: If I were an Afghani, I would probably…if I lived in Kabul, I probably would think that they accomplished something, sure.

I’m in no way defending his ignorance and his view; but I think Hugh and others focused a lot on his “I don’t support the troops” admission (not that jumping down his throat isn’t deserved) and looking over the point of his article: which is the dishonesty of many on the left, who say they support the troops when in fact, their actions speak otherwise.
Joel Stein is one out of millions of our fellow Americans who feel as he does. The difference is, he’s aware that he doesn’t support their military actions and mission in Iraq. The others who are against this war and against this President fool others and fool themselves into believing that they support the troops, while doing a lot of things that undermines the mission and undermines victory in Iraq.

I am far more concerned that a major publication would publish a piece of garbage like this and call it journalism. Stein is free, of course, to make a total jerk out od himself in print or interview which he absolutely did. The left just keeps shooting themselves in the foot over and over again. Hold up now. Joel is discussing whether he feels safer, which is his opinion. Whether he is safer or not is a matter of crunching statistics, perhaps, but in his opinion, he does not feel safer. As such, he acknowledges two things:
1) Soldiers have a bravery few people can lay claim to.
2) In his opinion, the war’s in the Middle East were futile.
Granted, his opinion seems ridiculously uninformed given the utter necessity to confront enemies of this country, but let’s not ridicule the boy for speaking honestly. He’s willing to do what few other liberals will and what every bloody conservative in this country has asked: stop using the troops as camoflauge.
Respect the man’s honesty and let him have his opinion. It’s not like his statements have an effect on our foreign policy or the overall morale of our troops. Does anyone here honestly think a soldier cares what one ed-op piece says?
