The last word is “black,” which happens to be the color of the X. But there are clearly other words that appear below the X as well. You can see them disrupt the white text below Cheney.

If you watch the video, additional text seems to appear below the X, partially obscuring the news ticker on the bottom. The online version isn’t of high enough resolution to make that text legible. But perhaps someone who recorded it can decipher the rest. My assumption is that a placeholder track got superimposed on the live feed by mistake. [...]

alright guys, someone else with better technology than I have available will have to figure this one out… I’m stumped… I don’t neccessarily expect the text to be anything special, other than something related to placing that X up there.. but I certainly am 90% the X was deliberate… but probably someone at CNN screwed up when they were playing around… I suppose it’s possible they meant it as a subliminal message, but they know the power of the blogs would tear them a new one, so my guess is still that all the libs (the only ones allowed) in the control room were having a good time putting that X up, but didn’t actually intend to put it on the live feed going out on the air.

Sorry to burst the conspiracy theories on this but CNN’s story seems to be panning out. If you download the torrent file from Crooks and Liars which is uncompressed this X lasts over a 3 frame segment. Ian’s slow-mo does not have the first frame where it appears in white and you can make out what is said below. It is kind of fuzzy and the first word is covered by the CNN logo but the remainder says “begins after frame of black”. That is a lead in for another broadcast. Sometimes you catch them on regular television also, so it goes along with CNN’s story of it being a bad switcher (which is used to switch from one program to another).

everyone is all jumping on board saying “yeah, it seems like it was just a glitch…” but hold on a second… where did this random giant X come from? Seriously? It doesn’t seem like a giant X on the screen would be something they would ever have ready to use on the switcher, much less occur as CNN says “technological malfunction not an issue of operator error.” I mean, they may have gotten more of a pass from me if they had said it was operator error, “whoops, slipped and hit a button but quickly turned it off”, but they’re just saying a random malfunction caused this? Come on…. Also, watching Fox & Friends First, they asked there control room if this is even possible.. they say no. I don’t know, not knowing anything about this equipment.. but it just seems very unlikely to me that this was a random “malfunction”.
As I said earlier, I don’t believe they intended to air it… rather some CNN libs were goofing around in the control room, and took that to air by mistake. But I just think this whole thing is being dropped and accepted as a “glitch” or “malfunction”, when common sense tells me that doesn’t wash. Again, I don’t know anything about this equipment… but I have never seen this before, and it just doesn’t seem to make sense to me.
