Expose the Left
October 31, 2005

NOTE: Rough transcript.

HOST: we’ll have it live as soon as it begins. Wait for that, more on the nomination of Samuel Alito is chris matthews. Of course, conservatives extremely happy.

MATTHEWS: Right.

HOST: Let’s cut to the chase. Do you think we’ll see a filibuster?

MATTHEWS: I don’t know. I think the democrats, i’m sitting here holding in my hands a disgusting document, put out not for at try bution. the democrats are circulating it. it’s a complaint sheet against judge alito’s nomination. the first thing they nail is he failed to win a mob conviction in 1988. they nail him on not putting italian mobsters in jail. why would they bring this up? this is either a very bad coincidence or very bad politics. either way it will hurt them. this document, not abortion rights, not civil rights but that he failed to nail some mobsters in 1988. this is the top of their list. amazingly bad politics. .

HOST: why not attack him if you are a liberal, why not openly say we fear for abortion rights?

MATTHEWS: i have to ask that. why did they put this document out. this will hurt the democrats. they shouldn’t go after ethnicity. as a prosecutor, a judge, a yale law grad. i don’t understand this kind of politics. unless they have someone who nut on the top of 20 items. the guy being than i talian american not nail a conviction in 17 years ago? interesting.

HOST: what you have in your hand, who signed it?

MATTHEWS: i was given it by one of the producers of nbc, called democrats are circulating this document. they are trying not to put a signature on it. it’s from them.

HOST: and is it a good move for president bush to have this nomination come on the first weekday after scooter libby indicted and resigned?

MATTHEWS: i think they had this list honed. they were going through a favorite list, probably a couple more in line behind him. they have been in this process for a long time. they knew the judges in the supreme court were getting on in years and they would have an opening and roberts did well and this one is of the same quality perhaps. we’ll see what the issues will be raised by the democrats. i think it will be an interesting fight. does it trigger extraordinary by the gang of 14? there it be a filibuster? the subquestion isl the 14 hang together and make sure there is a vote here? the republicans are in the mood for a nuclear option here.

HOST: you and i have discussed this before, whether a woman would have been nominated. his own wife said she would prefer to have a woman. sandra day o’connor has also been vocal about it. what will be fall-out be?

MATTHEWS: i think there’s a lot of phoniness about trying to find balance on the court. why not have gender balance. so many him like yourself coming out of the best law schools. you know going through harvard just as many women as men are coming out. why wouldn’t you go for them if you are looking for young talent? i assume the law firms are doing the same. they went for harriet miers, not top of the class and now they figured we tried. that’s enough. a lot of phoneiness about gender balance here.

Tim Chapman has the memo.

Thank you. THis is MORE proof that Matthews is NOT a Dem hatchet man. He attacks both sides with glee. Got that? Remember when Matthews attacks the President, that he dishes it the other way as well.

No Billy. He is most certaintly not moderate. Moderate is not attacking both sides equally – which he doesn’t do anyway – but not taking a side on any issue, whether it be on the right or on the left. He attacks the right many more times than he does the left. The only reason why he attacked the left this time is because this was big news and he wanted the exclusive. Please do not try to portray Matthews as a moderate when he nothing more than a political hack.

    Ian,
You’re right, he did this to get the exclusive.. But not just that. He’s also clearly upset that the Dems screwed up by releasing this document. It’s not like he’s so special that no one else will get wind of it, so this is damage control too, because if he held this and didn’t talk about it, and others like O’Reilly knew he did… he’s get destroyed. But it’s definitely deep down Chrissy crying over this misstep by the dems.

“Moderate is not attacking both sides equally – which he doesn’t do anyway – but not taking a side on any issue, whether it be on the right or on the left.”

That’s very far for the truth. A moderate is welcome to attack any side on any issue and most do. I wouldn’t call Chris Mathews “moderate” but he is not entirely one sided either – obviosuly everyone knows he is a Democrat, but so what? O’Reilly, Hume, Cavuto, etc, they’re all Republicans, you don’t complain that they mostly (if not only) bash the left, do you?

Mathews is right on point to attack a stupid and senseless act by some stupid democrat with access to a printer. The blogosphere has alredy come up with plenty of legitimate criticism of Alito, not sure how someone could be so stupid to accuse him of being soft on the mob.

    (a) Hume is conservative, not a Republican. Everyone knows that.

    (b) Cavuto runs a financial show, not a political show.

    (c) O’Reilly is conservative and an independent O’Reilly attacks both sides when he sees fit. I wouldn’t call him a moderate, but what he is—an independent.

I just find it kind of hypocritical that you all [liberals] complain FOX is right-winged, yet you are a-okay with MSNBC being extremely left-winged. (i.e. Matthews, Olbermann, etc.)

    His family is very influential.

He is not one to bet against.

His nomination, unlike Miers’ nod, is an offer you can’t refuse.

[...] Also very interesting is Chris Matthews over at The Political Teen who called the quickly disseminated Democrat National Committee Talking Points, “a pretty disgusting document.” He went ahead and disseminated, them, btw…just called them disgusting. No, I’m just kidding. He was appalled by the “amazingly bad politics” of it. When Matthews actually criticizes his party, that’s an interesting day. But then again…he sounds miffed at the “stupidity” of the move, and how it will hurt the Dems. Ian, first, where do you see me complaining about Fox being on the right side of things? Nowhere. I am perfectly fine with Fox being more conservative, just as I am perfectly fine with MSNBC and CNN being more on the left.

Hume is not a Republican? Yeah right! It’s not rocket science to figure out who these guys vote for. But as I said that’s all fine with me. People, even journalists, have the right to have their opinion and if someone is watching them and is too dumb to figure out their bias, then well, I can’t say I feel too bad for them. Sure there are no hard questions for Wilson, but the same goes for pretty much every interview these days whether ir’s a Democrat or Bush or Cheney or whoever.

And on a last note, while I certainly see how you think that everyone who disagrees with you is a liberal, please don’t call me that, cuz I am not.

Matthews is probably upset because the Dems were so clumsy in the way they did this that now he can’t use the talking points.

Or they are setting this up to somehow say that Karl Rove distributed these in a way that would make the dems look bad.
