The main topic on Hardball for the past few weeks has been the Valarie Plame leak, and tonight was no different. Kate O’Beirne of the National Review and Bob Herbert of the New York Times appeared on the show tonight to discuss the political implications of the scandal and the possibility of no indictments.
Chris Matthews says Fitzgerald needs to indict someone. Why? Because he’s spent two years investigating. So if the longivity of an investigation equals an indictment, then why is Bill Clinton not in jail?

Good question Ian. Longevity of an investigation may simply mean a vendetta or the old Murphy’s Law: The work expands to fill the time allotted.
Fitzgerald is a Republican so I don’t think there is a vendetta here. I guess he’s got the time so he’s using it.

It would be pretty funny if Fitzgerald held a press conference and said “Valerie Plame was not officially a covert agent. Therefore no crime has been committed and there will be no indictments. I have taken this long to make sure that no possible indictment was overlooked, but this investigation is now officially over. Thank you”
