On CNN’s Inside Politics, Robert Novak walked off the stage after saying “that’s bullshit” to James Carville. Carville apparently sparked Novak after he said “He’s [Novak] got to show these right wingers that he’s got a backbone, you know. It’s why the Wall Street Journal editorial page is watching you. Show ‘em that you’re tough.?

UPDATE: CNN suspends Novak indefinitely for cursing and walking off the set on live TV.

UPDATE: Nick Gillespie points out Carville is Boomhauer from TV’s King of the Hill. How true.

This “outburst” was nothing compared to that one. novak was asked a question, the opponent simply felt free to talk right over him and drown him out, and the host of the show, rather than letting him speak, acted as though he was all done and proceeded to ask Carville a new question.

I watched the Political Teen video and was rather surprised how the “meltdown” actually went down. It appeared that Novak was guilty of thinking out loud when he made the” bulls***” comment in response to Carville’s quip, and may well have been cracking under pressure that had already been mounting due to earlier scrapes with the media.

Surprisingly, none of these scrapes were the occasion for his slip of the tongue, however; the subject for discussion at the time of the incident was Katherine Harris’s candidacy for the U.S. Senate. It was also remarkable that after letting the profanity fly, he rather calmly pled with the host to “let it go.” That made it all the more odd when he walked off the set, which almost appeared to be distinct incident from the cursing. Though I’m sure he was less than enamored with Carville at the time, it almost looked like Novak may have been more upset at himself for the way he responded to Carville and that he left the set to collect his thoughts and ponder why he allowed himself to respond in the way he did.

I don’t say this by way of apologizing for or excusing Novak’s behavior; I think it goes to show that we are all vulnerable to giving vent to what our minds are thinking without considering the consequences. I have no doubt that James Carville has pulled himself up short of saying something on his mind that would have gotten him in trouble; yet again, that is no excuse for Mr. Novak. I do not applaud Novak as others in this forum have; as in the incident with our Vice President, he should have been in better control of his faculties.

Yeah, I have to agree with you. Seems Novak’s just getting old. I’ve watched Bob Novak on everything from “The Capital Gang” to “Crossfire” (I’ve lamented the cancellation of both by CNN and wondered at the fact the best replacement programming Rupert Murdoch can think of is “Anderson Cooper 360”), and the man has never lost his cool, even when confronted by far more insulting and directly confrontational comments. I think the culprit here is likely not Bob Novak’s temper, but his ancientness.

It’s like my dad always said, “Profanity is a strong expression of a weak mind.” Obviously, couldn’t think of any reasonable way to defend his position.

As for James Carvelle being a “goober,” it seems that at least one prominent person from your side of the aisle would vehemently disagree—his wife, Mary Matlin, a chief political strategist for Bush 41.

Oh, yeah . . . I almost forgot . . . When Paul Hackett said the President was an S.O.B, remember that his statement was preceded by his pledge to serve his country in the military, regardless. And remember, he spent a year in Fallujah (which, incidentally almost as much time as GWB has spent on vacation over the past four years.

Although I agree with the spirit of what Reality Czech is saying, I’d like to throw out a challenge to people on both sides of the aisle.

I do not agree with Novak. Never have as far as I can recall. And obviously there are a number of people out there who disagree with James Carvelle. The fact is, political disagreements are a fact of life.

Here’s the challenge . . . can we try to raise the level of political discourse above name calling and bickering. I’ve seen a number of personal jabs at the speech patterns and appearance of the two men on that show. I’ve seen similar comments on other sites, coming from both sides of the aisle. I have yet to see a single instance where calling Novak a “frog-faced drunk” or comparing Carvelle to “Boomhauer” has shed any light on the soundness (or lack thereof) of either side’s policiy positions.

Politics has become a game of verbal one-upmanship and territorial pissing. When will we actually start talking about what is best for this country, what policies are in all of our best interest?

    just a though . . . or two . . .

In case anyone fails to see, Novak is a bad man. He placed Ms. Plume, and any number of operatives associated with her, in peril of their lives with the help of Karl Rove. He was a willing participant in an illegal action. Why he is still out on the streets and able to say BS on TV is beyond me. As far as I’m concerned, every word that Novak utters is BS. He deserves to be suspended more for walking off than saying a mild expletive. Grow up, Robert, and take responsibility for your actions!
