Newspaper Guild President Linda Foley said ‘fair and balanced’ reporting is just a front for evil conservative reporting instead of the “truth”. More moonbat talk is in the video!
UPDATE: Bill Quick also picked up on this.

Ha. I’ve been saying exactly that for years—that there isn’t anything magical about presenting both sides of an argument. I have not, however, been saying it in the context of saying that my political opponents shouldn’t have a voice.
This fits right in with Kerry’s post-election whining; he has the nerve to complain not that the media is biased right, but to complain that his opponents have any voice at all in the media.

So let me get this right – any time one uses balance in the media is a conspiracy to foist conservative ideas on the nation? More importantly, does Foley also believe that the ideas that should not be presented are completely eschewed by the traditional media. I guess we live in different countries.

There’s quite a lot that’s “magical,” I think, about being presented with both sides of an argument. In most countries in the world it doesn’t happen; it hasn’t happened in America until rather recently.
What concerns me, however, is the notion that being presented with both sides of an argument is a form of “bias.” What a bizarre notion – and what totalitarian nonsese. The political Left should be ashamed of such fanatical and anti-democratic polical discourse.

I haven’t seen any attempt by the right to equivocate “balanced” with “true”. Just because you hear both sides of an issue doesn’t mean that one of them is necessarily correct.

What happened to our spineless relativistic, “nuanced” leftists? They’ve all become absolutist, moralistic fascists.

Very similar statement to Mark Halperin’s memo at ABC during the election where he admonished the staff not to “reflexively and artificially hold both sides ‘equally’ accountable”.

Yep, and only the liberals have the truth, so no other ideas (especially those evil conservative ideas) should be presented.

War Is Peace; Freedom Is Slavery; Ignorance Is Strength
Fair and Balanced is Evil CNSNews.com) – Claiming that conservative bias is a “major crisis in the U.S. media,” a panel of liberal journalists and media analysts said news organizations should promote “truth” over “balance.” “The conservatives h…

Huh? She’s right. Giving two “sides” on a question doesn’t necessarily get one closer to the truth if one side is setting out to lie.

Not surprisingly, you’re both wrong. The truth is that which is left standing when both sides of an argument have exhausted all their logical ammunition.
If you’re seeking the Truth, there’s never any harm in openly presenting facts which may contradict (or refine) your initial position. If you’re pushing a political position which can’t withstand exposure to facts, you should ask yourself why.

(Video link not working) Well, to tell you the truth, “balance” is not the same as truth—but “balance” certainly offers an edge over unfair and/or unbalanced in determining what is true …. (Mmmm, I wonder if my dear flaming liberal Dean supporting oldest child is noticing these statements?)

Only a Sith deals in absolutes, Anakin.
A true Jedi is fair and balanced, like the laws of nature, or like Fox News Channel.

Ottoe, others, think about the real topics of political speech (since, that’s the best context where I can really make sense of universal “both sides”)
Occasionally, we are talking about something with a truth value, such as WMD existence, but usually we aren’t.
Usually, we are talking about pure conjecture : should government pay our healthcare? Should SSN be privatized? Should people have the right to own a pistol? Is Saddam worth a war to oust? Is Bush a good president?
So, no, there is no objective truth to most of the debate that some prescient press can just dole out for us in the absence of reporting both sides of the debate (usually).
When there is, I can’t trust them anyway. Just look at the dishonest reporting about Iraq or Rathergate or whatever else. Reporters are a democratic group, they want democrats to win, and they are not saying Truth vs. Balance, they are saying DNC bullet points VS. DNC and RNC bullet points.
It’s so obvious to anyone but a very partisan democrat, and I’m sure it would be the reverse were reporters mostly republicans, but they aren’t.

Ya know….During Operation Desert Storm, and during the repective liberations of Afghanistan and Iraq, the MSM was very concerned about presenting balanced views of those wars. The point of view of the enemy had to be endlessly discussed. The cruelty and horror of war, its effects on enemy civilians were major stories. Now, in considering domestic politics, she says balance is inappropriate.

So, then, you favor requiring a reporter to go find a Nazi to defend killing Jews, gypsies, homosexuals and clergy, anytime someone says ‘The Holocaust was a tragedy?’ Do you think that anti-US people should be sought out for all stories on the WTC attacks?
If someone comes up with a cure for breast cancer, is a reporter obligated to find a pro-breast cancer advocate in order to publish?
Totalitarianism is the stupid, unthinking presentation of spun views. Any requirement that the truth be “balanced” against cranks, crackpots, psychopaths and congenital liars is foolhardy indeed.
You should be ashamed for standing up for crankhood, cracked pots, psychopathology and lying.
