When I heard that the discussion led by Dave Winer (A Reasonable Disagreement) was getting a bit argumentative, I rushed over with my camera. This clip is of Dave Winer and Stan going at it over a comment Dave made.
Oh yeah by the way – Dave is the guy who developed RSS feeds, and the way I understand it he either made or contributed to user (one of the first, if not the first blogger software). Sorry for the technical remarks, I am just not sure and going by what I heard.
Scared Monkeys did a great live blogging the whole session.
UPDATE: Video is now working fine!

Dave’s original web content management software was called “Frontier”, which provided the basis for “Manila” (which is still a great blog hosting platform) and “Userland Radio”. See userland.com for more info.
I used to read his blog (scripting.com) every day before blogging became a buzzword (must have been back in 97 or 98, maybe even as earlier, I guess). At the time, he focused on tech news, tech history, and the development of his software. Somewhere along the way, as he began writing more and more about politics, I stopped enjoying his blog, and started to be insulted by it on a daily basis. I’m an Ivy League Libertarian Eagle Scout – an odd duck to be sure. I had maxed my dosage of Winer’s kind of intolerance (“I’m right, and if you disagree, you are either stupid, evil, or uneducated.”) simply by getting undergrad and grad degrees from two different Ivy League universities; I didn’t need to seek out some more via my blog reading. Too bad, because he IS a really smart guy, and I think that his contribution to blogging has been VASTLY underappreciated.

Dave Winer’s “A Respectful Disagreement” at BlogNashville
Dave’s introduction was “How do we disagree with each other without burning bridges?” Conclusion after attending the session: Winer doesn’t know, and the guy is a massive control freak. He tried to lead the discussion, but once it got off the primr…

Dave Winer is an ego maniac – that is a fact, not an opinion.
He is so completely clueless that I can’t believe it. How can such a smart person act so ignorant.
I hate it when geeks get all high on themselves trying to create a class/caste system.
Winer, you’ve peaked…. time to hang up the keyboard.

I’ve tried to open this in the Safari (failed) Quicktime (failed) WMP (failed) and VLC (failed).
The only possibly useful error message is from VLC:
“main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WMV3’.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.”
Clues please? Thanks.

Well, it seems that Dave’s grand vision to have a “respectful disagreement” was actually just a ruse for a “Don’t Criticize Me” session.

The idiot here is neither the speaker nor stan. The idiot is the guy that said “don’t feed the troll”. As if either stan or the speaker was starting an argument just to cause trouble. What’s the name of the guy that said “don’t feed the troll”, I want to remember it, anyone know?

What s great clip! The idiot in the audience states “I was an Economics major Dave?; but I seriously doubt he graduated with a degree in Economics. If he had he’d acknowledge that the economy is headed to hell in a hand basket. A statement like his just makes him look dumber than he already is. How can an oil based economy thrive when the enemy controls most of the oil? How can a country that just 15 years ago that lived by an anti-communist doctrine turn itself around to kissing up with the largest communist country in the world because it largely benefits corporate America? Sending industrial contracts, jobs and money overseas does not strengthen the American economy.

Biff,
I hear you went to school at an Ivy. Also, you’re an Eagle Scout, and have been involved in blogging forever. That’s great. You’re swell.
